Q&A: There’s A Tuesday

Indie-dream pop band from Christchurch There’s A Tuesday are here to bless your ears with their latest spectacular single ‘Baby Blue’. Signed to BENEE’s Olive Records and opening for BENEE this week for the Australian leg of her world tour, the band chats to us about their new song, how band member Nat ended up getting hypothermia during a music video shoot (it’s okay, she's fine now! 🙌) and more.

We'd love to know about your musical journey so far from when you first started making music together!

Originally, Minnie and Nat were just a duo! But we formed as a full band in what was the last year of high-school for most of us (2019). We all went to different schools so would find time in the evenings to have practices in the living room of Angus’s family home. We started playing some gigs opening for local bands such as The Butlers. The singer, Walt, is actually Minnie’s brother and now our manager! We wrote lots of music together and started playing more and more shows. We were lucky enough to play a heap of festivals at the end of 2020 such as Rhythm and Alps, Rhythm and Vines, Le Currents and Electric Avenue! All of which helped us gain momentum and allowed larger audiences to hear our music. Now we are signed to Olive Records and are heading over to Australia next week to open for BENEE. We feel so lucky and proud of what we have achieved.

Absolutely, those are some insane achievements! Congrats! And your latest single 'Baby Blue' is incredibly stunning, we love it so much! Can you tell us about the meaning of this track and the inspiration behind it?

Thank you so much! Like a lot of the music we write, this song really comes down to anxiety and overthinking! It talks about struggling to tell important people in your life things that you want to say to them and how if you don’t, you later on regret it!

Definitely some important themes a lot of people can relate to for sure. What were your main highlights working on 'Baby Blue'?

A highlight for me (Nat) was getting to spend a lot of time with Minnie, Angus and Joel perfecting it! They’re my best friends. A LOWlight was filming the music video where I was lying in a cold pool of water to get one of the shots and ended up getting hypothermia. The real kicker is after that, none of those shots were even used in the music video hahaha.

Oh no, that’s awful! The sacrifices we make for art! The music video turned out amazing though. Do you have more new music on the way soon?! If so, what can we expect?

Yes we do.. exciting!! You can expect a larger work full of life experiences and lessons from 20 year olds haha.

Love it! Who would you say are your biggest inspirations in music?

PHOEBE BRIDGERS. The amount of respect we have for her songwriting is a very great, great, great amount. A few other our inspirations would be The Butlers, Julia Jacklin, Marlon Williams and The Beths.

Who are some of your favourite NZ artists right now and are there any songs in particular that you especially love or connect with?

BENEE is a huge one! We also love The Beths, Daffodils and Muroki. We love ‘A Leo Underwater’ by Daffodils.

Yes, we’re obsessed with them too! What would you say you love most about New Zealand?

The people. We are all so lucky to have such beautiful friends and family. We are all born in Christchurch! So have a few favourite spots there such as Sumner Beach, North & South Gourmet (Chinese Restaurant) and Monavale Park.

What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learnt in your career so far, and what advice do you have for other artists out there?

I think the most important thing we have learnt and kinda live by is just being super authentic and ourselves. I feel like when you are true to yourself, you create music that resonates with you directly! And then if other people enjoy it, that’s great too!

Lastly, we end every interview with this question - if you could say one thing to every person in the world, what would it be?

Be kind :)

THANKS SO MUCH THERE’S A TUESDAY! MAKE SURE YOU KEEP UP WITH THEM ON INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK, SPOTIFY AND APPLE MUSIC.
