Unpack the Track: Tarn PK’s ‘Simple Love’

WELLINGTON ARTIST & PRODUCER TARN PK EXPLORES THE WORLD OF HYPERPOP WITH 'SIMPLE LOVE'

Incorporating elements of hyperpop and alt-pop, 'Simple Love' is filled with exciting vocal effects and electrifying production including crunchy kicks and thrilling synth lines! What's the concept of this track?

I wanted to approach 'Simple Love' with a completely fresh approach to the rest of my music I'd made. I love songs that feel really full but with as few elements as possible. Sonically, I just wanted to feel free and untethered from previous limitations I had been placing on myself. Embracing that bedroom aspect of the music and leaving it feeling a little messy was something I want to do.

Who/what were your artistic influences for this track?

I'm a bit all over the show but for this song - I remember listening to a song ‘FANTAZIA’ by Roy Blair and being blown away by the sound design felt, particularly the way he used the clav. Some other influences would be the likes of underscores, Maxwell Young, and anything produced by the Neptunes.

What was the writing & production process like?

I found this Splice chord loop and I just sang melodies over it. I wouldn’t usually write this way but I wanted to try something different and take production decisions out of the equation. There's something really freeing when you just make something and don’t worry too much about quality. I then worked on the writing with Devin Abrams looking to pitch the song to publishing.

What was your main highlight working on 'Simple Love'?

It was such a highlight to have a song I'd written almost a whole year ago be given a new life when I re-produced it earlier this year. I hadn’t thought that it could be a song for me to release, but it all just clicked into place.

We can't wait to hear more music from you! What can we expect from your upcoming music?

Just different stuff to what I’ve done before. I’m aiming for an EP late this or early next year. Hopefully I can bring it all together and get some more stuff coming out soon.
