Q&A: JOSIE MOON

GIVING US A TASTE OF HER UPCOMING DEBUT ALBUM ‘PAINT ME HOW YOU NEED ME’ WITH HER LATEST SINGLE ‘DEEP SPACE’, WELLINGTON ALT-POP ARTIST JOSIE MOON CONTINUES TO SOLIDIFY HER HYPNOTIC & TIMELESS SOUND WHILE EXPLORING THE THEME OF SELF EXPRESSION.

WE’D LOVE TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR MUSICAL JOURNEY SO FAR FROM WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED MAKING MUSIC!

I started teaching myself music production while I was in my first year of university, got singing lessons for my 18th birthday and from there I’ve just been trying to learn as much as I can and try new things with my musical style and voice.

CONGRATS ON YOUR LATEST STUNNING RELEASE ‘DEEP SPACE’ - WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE MEANING OF THIS TRACK AND THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT?

Deep Space’ is a hazy neo soul track that centres around using substances and parties to dissociate from the stresses and fear of reality.

WHAT WAS THE WRITING & PRODUCTION PROCESS FOR ‘DEEP SPACE’ LIKE?

Since it’s quite a new sound for me, it took a long time to get this track right. Chris (Art Heist) and I worked on the production together late at night when we were both really overtired and wanting to try something new. The lyrics and vocal melodies took me a year to get right. I think when you are branching out into new genres, it takes a while to situate yourself in the sound and figure out what feels like you. I’m really proud of how it turned out though, and I learnt a lot while working on it.

AMAZING! DO YOU HAVE MORE MUSIC ON THE WAY SOON? IF SO, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

My debut album “Paint Me How You Need Me” is coming out early next year. We have a couple more singles on the way that will showcase the full range of sounds we explored on the LP.

CAN’T WAIT! WHO WOULD YOU SAY ARE YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS IN MUSIC?

August D, Dean, The 1975, The Japanese House, Rina Sawayama, I could go on for ages ….

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE NZ ARTISTS RIGHT NOW AND ARE THERE ANY SONGS IN PARTICULAR THAT YOU LOVE OR CONNECT WITH?

Lévyne is my biggest fave - I think her production and vocals are so beautiful and when her song ‘Look At Me’ came out I listened to it on repeat for weeks.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN NEW ZEALAND? DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE PLACES TO TRAVEL TO OR LOCAL SPOTS TO VISIT?

When I was younger it felt like a curse, but now I’m growing up I cherish the quiet. I love travelling with my family the most, especially during summer and just getting to spend time with them wherever we are is the most valuable to me right now.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNT AS AN ARTIST SO FAR?

Patience. I’m such an impatient person that it destroys me when I’m waiting for music to be released. I just want everything to happen immediately, but I’ve learned I just need to work hard and sit back and wait for everything to unfold.

LASTLY, IF YOU COULD SAY ONE THING TO EVERY PERSON IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Be kind to one another.

THANKS SO MUCH JOSIE! MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW HER ON INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK, SPOTIFY OR APPLE MUSIC.
