Q&A: BRODY LEIGH

Brody Leigh welcomes you to the ‘Sad Club’ with her highly anticipated solo debut - an intimate diary entry documenting her very first heartbreak showcasing her mesmerising vocal ability and her profound talent for storytelling. We’re not crying, you are. 😭

Previously recognised as one half of Smokefree Rockquest winners and brother-sister duo Ben & Brody, it’s only the beginning for this young superstar in the making and we could not be more hyped about what’s to come!

WE ARE SO EXCITED FOR YOUR SOLO PROJECT AND ABOUT THE RELEASE OF YOUR DEBUT SINGLE! WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE IT WAS THE RIGHT TIME TO START ON YOUR SOLO JOURNEY?

I'm excited too! I've always really wanted to release music as a solo artist, and last year I took a gap year after graduating high school - so the timing seemed really right. I had a lot going on in my life that I was writing about and it all happened really naturally.

AND WOW. 'SAD CLUB' IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, HITTING US IN THE FEELS IN THE MOST AMAZING WAY. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE MEANING OF THIS TRACK AND THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT?

Thank you!!!!! Sad Club is just simply about heartbreak, more specifically - how much it SUCKS. I wrote the song after my relationship ended, I was really missing somebody and it was a whole new experience for me. It's extremely personal, somewhat vulnerable. But I think that's what makes it special.

WE LOVE IT! WHAT WERE YOUR MAIN HIGHLIGHTS WORKING ON 'SAD CLUB'?

The highlight of this track was definitely hearing it come to life in the studio. I originally wrote it one night at home on the piano. Then I remember sharing it with MCK and Joel Jones in the studio, who both saw something in the song - so we decided to record it. The process of hearing it turn into something so much bigger and fuller from what it initially started as, was inspiring for me.

WE CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR MORE OF YOUR MUSIC! WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR UPCOMING SINGLES?

Variety! I have so much music that I'm excited for you to hear. Last year was a big journey of artist development for me, and I played around with heaps of different genres/ music styles. Keep an eye out x

WHO HAVE BEEN YOUR MAIN INFLUENCES AND INSPIRATIONS FOR YOUR MUSIC?

The range of inspiration is pretty hectic. I grew up admiring everything from Amy Winehouse to Eminem. Heaps of late 80's and early 90's bands too. But more specifically I've found a lot of my artist inspiration in people like Julia Michaels, Norah Jones, Holly Humberstone, Lucy Blue, the list is endless <3

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE NZ ARTISTS AT THE MOMENT AND WHICH SONGS DO YOU PARTICULAR LOVE RIGHT NOW?

Wholeeee lotta love for Lévyne, Luca George, Foley, BEXY and Park Rd who are all killing it. I truly have their music on repeat.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST LESSONS YOU'VE LEARNT SINCE STARTING YOUR SOLO PROJECT, AND WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS BEGINNING THEIR ARTIST JOURNEY?

Biggest lesson: be confident. Don't let pressure get to you. It's soooo easy to get caught up comparing sound, appearance and 'success' as an artist - I definitely have my moments, but at the end of they day, do what you want, because that's what music is about. I'm still learning this all the time, but I think it's really important advice. :)

Thanks so much Brody! Make sure to keep up with her on Instagram, Facebook, Spotify or Apple Music.
