DROP OF THE MONTH: #02
“trippin’ up” - MCK
Congrats on the new track! Where did you get the initial idea and inspiration for the song?
MCK: After Josh (Wells*) and I wrote “Better” it kind of unlocked some old feelings that I hadn’t processed properly from a past relationship. I stumbled across some of the samples without looking too hard - I think when the idea hits all at once, the production just finds you if that makes sense. I also wanted to do something a bit more RnB inspired to balance out the pop sounds on the EP, so it quickly became my favourite.
Can you tell us a little bit about the meaning behind the track?
MCK: It’s about not giving yourself enough time to heal from things that have hurt you or affected you in some way, and how that can stop you from moving forward in relationships (with yourself and with others) productively.
What was the process like for writing, producing and recording this track?
MCK: I made the demo and wrote most of the lyrics then brought it to Josh — it was the last thing we made and I think it only took one session! He added the guitar solo and tidied up the production and we just didn’t overthink it.
What were some of the main highlights working on the track?
MCK: The guitar solo is one of my favourite sections along with the bridge so watching Josh come up with that was a highlight, it’s so fun to groove to and love playing it live.
Lastly, would you rather “trip up” at your wedding or performing on stage at Spark Arena? 😅
MCK: Definitely my wedding. Hopefully whoever I marry is just as clumsy as I am or at least thinks it’s cute that I’m so uncoordinated.
