One of Te-Whanganui-A-Tara’s most exciting up and coming songwriters, First Reserve offers a new captivating music video to accompany their latest single ‘alice’ - with edgy, eye-catching visuals alongside comedic elements that also authentically captures the raw energy & punch of their live performance.
Written last year and recorded with Joe Ledword from Wet Denim, the track that has now become a crowd favourite is drawn from personal experience. In a recent interview, First Reserve mentions “everyone has an Alice in their life, someone who kind of exists to bring them down but not immediately obviously”, where this song serves as a rejection of that archetype.
ABOUT FIRST RESERVE
2024 has been a formative year for First Reserve, the pseudonym of Te-Whanganui-A-Tara’s Ryan Connaghan (he/they). They’ve supported visiting internationals Hot Mulligan (US) and Movements (US), and has toured with Kiwi favourites PARK RD and Wet Denim. The artist has amassed a cult of devoted supporters, thanks to their identifiable sound that draws inspiration from a variety of genres, including folk, rock, and pop. Connaghan affectionately refers to their music as “kinda emo, kinda queer – very catchy.” Following the release of dynamic singles “alice” and “telling the same joke twice,” First Reserve will be continuing their momentum with their debut EP “you used to find me funny” set for release in spring 2024.
